BIOGRAPHY

Dereck Mpofu is an Afrofusion musician , songwriter and performer, a melting pot of cultures being based Harare, Zimbabwe but who culturally hails from Plumtree and was born and bred in Mutare who rose to fame after his song “ChisikanaChangu Zimbabwe” became a mega-hit. Mpofu is an expert at using creative mediums to reach out to people on environmental, gender and health issues showcasing his love for humanity and unique initiatives resulting in tone sensitive productions. He has traveled around Africa, Europe, the USA and Russia to highlight the plight of the continent and the world’s environmental and health systems through music song and dance.The popularity of his hit-song resulted in him being appointed the Goodwill Environmental Ambassador for Zimbabwe under the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate and the City of Harare in 2012 as well as travelling to the Seychelles Carnival promoting tourism. He has proven himself as a passionate artiste, musician and multi-instrumentalist. He is largely regarded by peers as well as his fans as an innovative musician, philanthropist, author, columnist, environmentalist, and social entrepreneur whose passion is to produce music that addresses social issues like the terrain, gender equality and health. Besides music he’s also an author and avid columnist who has led discussions into uncharted territories in terms of the tools at our disposal to beget social change especially in what affects our tomorrow.

In 2014 during the xenophobic tensions in South Africa targeted at foreign nationals he banded with Nigerian artist Kunle Ayo, Southern Africa notable artists Winnie Khumalo, Teddy Bears, Botswana’s Amantle, Spiza and Bouncy, Norry Malongi from the Democratic Republic of Congo together with original artists Alexio Kawara, Esther Mukazika, Ras Caleb and Willis Wataffi on the song against xenophobia, “We’re African — No to Xenophobia”. His accomplishments include writing the book Little Green Ambassadors, an environmental book for kids with rhymes and colouring. To date he boasts of 4 musical albums and produced first ‘Handizirini’ in 2008 which performed fairly well on the request. In 2012 he released ‘Dr Philosophy’ which was produced by Mono Mukundu with the hit ‘Chisikana changu Zimbabwe’ which marked the beginning of his journey in the music industry. In 2016 and 2017 he released ‘Diplomatic Alliances’ and ‘Godobori’ independently.Dereck also has a live DVD recording and environmental albums under his sleeve. The legend and dub poet Albert Nyathi is his role model and his tutor together with Mono Mukundu who is also a close friend. He is heavily influenced by JohnChibadura, Muse, Sobaton, Black Mambazo, Kevon Edmunds and Jabu Khanyile in the way that they revolutionized art. The artist has a high interest in charity work and has started projects which target the less privileged in the country.
